The Young Singers In Harmony Programme is a way for students study and perform barbershop harmony in school music programmes and as a co-curricular activity.
The aim is to provide materials and resources, training and performance opportunities for young women and men, and to foster appreciation for this unique musical art form.
What are the benefits of teaching barbershop harmony to young singers? The ringing harmony brings singers together and makes the music fun. Because of its a capella style, each singer is able to develop the confidence of being able to sing without accompaniment. Singing barbershop harmony can be a hobby for life, giving students an outlet to sing and perform long after they have graduated.
Young people from all around New Zealand have been exploring this fun and exciting art form since 1990. Not only is barbershop incredibly enjoyable, it also helps to enhance one's confidence and skills in listening, vocal production, intonation, rhythm and performance showmanship.
Apart from having the chance to demonstrate their musicianship at school and community concerts, YSIH participants also have the opportunity to strut their stuff against other young barbershoppers at their Regional competition, or represent their region at the National Competition.
This is an opportunity for young women aged between 13 - 25 from all over New Zealand to participate in a fun, exciting and high energy barbershop workshop / camp where they learn about the craft of barbershop from experienced Sweet Adelines singers.
